I've been plotting, not the overthrow of a government or Cadburys factory, but my latest WIP. Although overthrowing the Cadburys factory could be a good thing right now. I was stuck, sort of. My characters while thought out were still not acting how I wanted them to and as a result nothing much was happening on the page.
That was until I listened to a few podcasts, especially the one by Michael Hauge. He made me think about story structure and where my story was headed. He deals mainly with screenwriting, but his advice is great for novelists as well. Plotting out the major incidents of my story and writing the ending before I've really pushed ahead with the story has opened up a whole new tumble of words.
I know where we're headed now, so the road there needs to be fleshed out fully.
Today I've written over 6,000 words and am feeling more confident in this storyline. I love Michaels breakdown of Thelma and Louise (not that my story has anything to do with their plot). He goes through what happens, when and why in order to show the three act structure associated with it. I like his way of thinking. Have now grabbed myself a copy of Syd Field's book "Screenwriting" and am plowing my way through it. It's very similar to Michael's workshop but opens it up a little more. I will never look at a movie the same way again.
